BRUTALISM presents Kalkül der Form at St. Gertrud

BRUTALISM is pleased to present Max Eilbacher's and Phillip Sollmann's Kalkül der Form at St. Gertrud. With Kalkül der Form, Max Eilbacher (Horse Lords) and Phillip Sollmann (Efdemin) present their first collaboration, a multichannel digital synthesis system in the brutalist space of Gottfried Böhm's St. Gertrud church in Cologne. Their work was world premiered at CTM Festival in Berghain this year followed by a six week long installation at Neuer Aachener Kunstverein (NAK) that included site specific performances by both artists. With this work, Eilbacher and Sollmann create a sound system based on simple forms that move along a minimal curve. The tangible material is created through the generation of geometric configurations and the perceptual fusion of the musical actors, which run against and next to each other in a constant morphology of different designs. Specifically, their digital sound generator uses ten sine wave oscillators arranged evenly along a sine wave curve with slightly staggered time intervals. The sound sequences, the pitches and the temporal position at which each voice is heard are related to a geometric curve. The structure of the sequence and the relationship between the order of the individual voices and the speed at which the sounds are played are subject to complex formulas and the interventions of the two performers. The concert program is complemented by two live performances in spatial audio from Justin and Lomi on an 8 channel system provided by Planar. Dornen will show an installation at the crypt. There will be an Aftershow clubnight at Gewölbe with Efdemin, Lomi and Mariami.
